TAMS 3 Grant in Ireland

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TAMS 3 Solar Grant rate for Irish farmers?

Under the Solar Capital Investment Scheme (SCIS) of TAMS 3, a farmer that is seen as eligible can request and receive a grant that covers 60% of the cost of installing commercial solar panels and a battery to their property. This specific grant has its own maximum limit of €90,000 investment. This means your investment in renewable energy will not reduce or impact your standard €90,000 TAMS 3 allocation for other farm machinery, buildings, or nutrient storage.

Who is eligible for the TAMS 3 Solar Grant?

To qualify for the 60% Solar Capital Investment Scheme, you must meet several specific criteria outlined by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). Applicants must hold a valid Herd Number or Department Identifier and declare a minimum of 5 hectares of owned, leased, or rented land under the Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) program, though intensive enterprises like pig or poultry farms can qualify with at least 20 production units instead. Crucially, 100% of the electricity generated must be used strictly for self-consumption on the farm holding, which can include the main farm dwelling house if it is on the same meter. Additionally, the applicant must have completed a Farm Safety Code of Practice half-day course or hold a FETAC Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Agriculture within the last 5 years to successfully secure the funding.

Do I need planning permission for agricultural solar panels in Ireland?

In the vast majority of cases, no. Under Irish planning exemptions for renewable energy, you can install rooftop solar panels on agricultural buildings up to 300kW, and ground-mounted systems up to 17kW, without needing full planning permission. However, restrictions can apply if your farm is near an airport, an airfield, or a protected architectural site. As part of our service at Solar PV Panels Ireland, we will conduct a full site evaluation to secure the necessary planning exemption certificate before your application is submitted.

Where In Ireland Do You Install Solar Panels For Farms?

We install solar panels for farms all over Ireland, including in LongfordMeathRoscommonGalwayOffalyLaoisSligoWestmeathKildareMayo and Dublin. If you’re interested in installing pv solar panels then please get in touch to discuss your options.

How much can I save with the TAMS 3 Solar PV Grant?

The maximum grant funding you can receive is €54,000, which represents a 60% subsidy on a maximum eligible expenditure cap of €90,000. For a typical 30kW system suited for dairy or tillage farms, a standard €30,000 cost is reduced by an €18,000 grant, leaving your net out-of-pocket cost at just €12,000. If you require a larger 50kW system for an intensive poultry or large dairy operation, a €50,000 investment is cut by a €30,000 grant down to a €20,000 net cost.

Can I install solar panels on my farmhouse under TAMS 3?

No, the solar panels cannot be mounted directly onto the roof of a domestic dwelling house or a standard domestic garage under TAMS 3 rules. The solar PV array must be installed on agricultural structures (such as dairy parlours, dry stock sheds, grain stores, or poultry houses) or mounted as a ground-array. However, you can use the electricity generated by your farm-shed panels to power your household, provided the house is located on the same land holding and grid connection.

What is the maximum size solar PV system covered by TAMS 3?

The maximum system size eligible for grant aid under the scheme is 62kWp. While you are legally allowed to install a larger system if your farm’s infrastructure demands it, any capacity exceeding 62kWp will not qualify for the 60% DAFM funding. Furthermore, you must submit a professional On-Farm Solar PV Survey with your application. The Department requires that the system is scaled correctly and does not exceed 90% of your farm’s verified historic annual electricity consumption.
